Default Transfer case linkage adjustment

I was looking through the manual for the NV242 for the linkage adjustment. It looks pretty straight-forward except for step 8:

"(8) Lower vehicle just enough to enter vehicle. Be
sure all wheels are off shop floor. Then start engine,
shift transmission into gear, and shift transfer case
through all ranges to verify correct adjustment."

Shouldn't the transmission be in neutral when changing ranges on the transfer case? This is the first 4WD vehicle I have ever owned, so pardon my ignorance.

No, these are shift on the fly transfer cases, meaning that the transmission can be in gear and the truck moving when you shift, there are speed limitations to this to keep from damaging it, but they won't apply for this test, this is just so you can tell if the different ranges are engaging.

you can shift between 2hi,4hiPT,and 4hiFT (some just have 4hi) while in gear and off the gas while moving slowly. If you want to go into neutral or 4lo you need to put the transmission in neutral and need to be under 5mph
