Default 98 Durango 4wd front axle

I'm picking up a Durango tomorrow and the only thing wrong with it is a shop didn't refill the front diff with oil and the housing pretty much exploded. So, I'm just going to remove the half axles but I don't know if I need the axles bolted to the hub to hold the bearings together or not. Can I just remove the half axles or do I need to cut the cv boot and bolt in the splined part back in minus most of the axle? Thanks in advance!

if you are driving it a very short distance home and then going to repair it correctly i would say it doesnt matter, however if you hvae any distance to go i would not suggest driving it with the axle shafts out, the nuts that hold them on preload the wheel bearings and this preload is necessary for their continued proper operation
