Default Strange 4x4 issue!

Brand new here and brand new to dodge! At least for SUV.

I will try and describe this as best as possible. I don't have much knowledge on transfer cases etc.

1999 durango 4x4 5.2 auto

First off. If I shift to neutral (barely rolling) and shift the lever down to 4l it engages easily and works perfectly as far as I can tell. It also disengages just fine.

If I shift from 2h to 4h it doesn't seem to engage at all. The dash indicator "part time 4wd" comes on. Take your hand off the selector it just kinda falls back into 2h position. No force or anything. Just nothing is holding it in the 4h position.

I have tried it in park, neutral, drive, and in drive at several different speed areas. I have tried holding the lever they for a while to see if it just takes a while and nothing.

What's up? I can't find any info on a problem like this anywhere. Just hoping someone here knows!

Is it possible the linkage is slipping and you are only actually getting into High range? I thought there was only one shift fork for 2,H,and L. Just an idea. I could be wrong.

That is very possible as the 98-00 4x4 lever is connected to a rod that goes to the TC... the lever is held in place on the rod by one bolt that would have vibrated loose or something.

I am quite sure it it 4L. Pretty obvious on that one. Into 4th gear by 15mph...

Ok. I found someone describing the same thing. He says after replacing transfer case the lever/linkage is off. He fescribes same problem of it just popping out of 4h and 4l works but dash still says "part time 4wd" just like mine. I guess there's a different indicator for 4l?

It will not change. It is always part-time. Fulltime is for 241 with awd position...4 position where 231 is 3 position minus neutral.

Ok, I thought there might be a different indicator for 4L

I can't think of anything externally other than a misaligned linkage. I did look at a video on youTube and it shows 2 forks going in.maybe one for hi and low? Could have broken one?

I just bought it, it was like this.

I really hope it's something external. Say a fork is broke, what kind of hours is that to have changed out?

If your mechanically inclined and you have a set of good snap ring pliers it looks relatively easy. No shimming bearings or nothing that i saw. If not id at least take it out before taking it somewhere to cut some more cost down. I'm sure this isn't what you were asking for. Just saying what i would do.
