Question 2000 Durango: Trans OD & Lockup Solenoid Problems

Hi, I am new to the forum but I am impressed by it. I am a new self taught mechanic, so, i am learning as I go. I am a struggling mother of 4 who lives on little income. Mechanics wanted to charge much more than I could afford. So, I had no choice but to do the work myself. I am the only parent my kids have and have to drop off/ pick up them at 3 different schools, sport practices, and appointments. My truck is our only source of transportation.
I have been installing an OD/ Lockup Solenoid onto my Durango. I read and researched how to do it. To my suprise I have actually been able to acomplish most of the steps but I have now ran into a problem. I am trying to take off the Valve Body. But from my understanding I have to take off the Manual Lever. Only problem is there are more parts around the lever than I expected. I wasn't told how to take those other parts off. I am enclosing a picture to indicate what I am talking about. I have labeled the parts 1, 2, and 3 because I do not know what their part names are. I need help with instructions on how to take the parts off and what tools I might need to do so. Maybe, even a diagram and tha part names, . I do appreciate any help! Thanks...

Very impressive! I am currently working inside my transmission for the first time. 1 is the throttle valve cable spring, 2 is the throttle valve cable, 3 is the gear selector cable. Remove the spring from either end, then loosen the bolt holding the throttle valve cable bolt and pry it up with a flat head screwdriver. Next loosen the bolt holding the gear selector cable and pry it up.

I'm at work on my phone, but if you search for a sonnax sure cure shift kit you should find a great how to with pics. I have it bookmarked home and it has been very helpful.

What Durango do you have? 5.9L, 4x4?

Talking Thanks!!!! 2 more Questions...

I have a 5.9L 2X2.
Thanks so much for the info! I was up all night trying to research when i fell asleep at my computer. Haha! I still can't beleive I am actually doing it. I hoping to be finished by tomorrow the latest. Trying to not rush. I do have 2 questions, though.
1. Will my truck move when i remove the parts i am going to remove today? I felt it move a tad when i was messing with the manual lever. It kinda freaked me out.
2. How do i sift the tran fluid to reuse it? I know I probably will have to buy some more but didnt want to dump what i had. A week b4 i started working on my truck i had the trany flushed and new fluid put into it. Thats why I wanted to reuse the fluid.
Any and all suggestions welcomed... Thanks again!

I've had my parking brake on and had no issues with it rolling, if you feel unsafe place some blocks on either sides of the wheels.

I have heard people say they use paint strainers to filter the fluid, but I've never tried it before. Make sure the pan you drain the fluid into is absolutely clean too.

I just had to order another part for mine, and I have no idea when it will get here, so mine is still sitting open.

Best of luck!

While you have the pan down replacing all them sensors.... i would recommend replacing the 3-4 accumulater spring... really easy to do and the OEM ones are know to snap (as mind did) and leave you without OD...

Also, when you get it all back together and fill it up, you may have some issues with you truck not going into gear right away... This is normal as you just have air in the system that needs to work its way out.... went you put it in gear just sit there and let it go into gear on its own, it will after it works things out.. DON'T tromp on the gas trying to force it into gear as you will burn something up inside the trans.... i'm going though the same thing as i just did the same repair last week... my truck is now finally starting to act normal now that the air is out...

Hope all this info is helpful... any other questions don't hesitate to ask!

P.S Kudos to you for stepping up and being a parent to your kids.... seems like now days that is starting to be seen less and less...

Thumbs up Almost Finished...

Junkie97neon and Old_School: Thank you all for the help. Yall rock .Without you guys I wouldn't have been able to do it. You all were so prompt and detailed to help a newby like me, yall made it easy enough for me to understand.
I am finished installing the part. Now, it is time for me to put all the pieces back together again. I hope it is easier than takening them off or I will be .
If I have any questions I will be sure to post them for yall. I am hoping that I will be in no time.
Thank you for the compliments. It is hard to find parents who really care nowdays, but it's really hard to find good people, also. So, you both should give yourselves pats on the backs because of you guys caring enough to answer, I will be able to take my kids everywhere they need to go. I am disabled and I have lots of doctors appointments to go to. Now, i will be able to go where i need to go, as well as my kids.
I will make sure to post if i have any questions.
