Default Trailer Wiring Harness

Had to haul a small trailer the other day and was in a hurry so didn't have time to look really, but I snapped a quick pic. Basically what I want to know is where is this supposed to run out of the truck that is the CORRECT way. I see few spots I believe it could, but I'd rather make sure and do it right. At the time I just hung it out the back and closed the gate, but of course I don't want to do that again!

2001 Durango if it makes a difference.

the tow wiring comes out underneath by the spare tire in factory installs, however for occasional towing what you did (hang it out and close the gate on it) will be just fine as long as you put it back inside when your not using it

I just don't want to do that as to not pinch the wires in the gate...even for occasional towing. My first thought was to run it through the rubber grommet you remove to drop the spare, but I do live in a wetter area so I figured it was best not to. I guess next time I have to tow something, I'll just run it through there for the tow...maybe unless there is a specific area.
