Default G28 Recall

Hi there. Bought a 2001 Durango R/T almost a month ago. Noticed that I could not always get it into park. Sometimes it would stay in reverse, sometimes it would go in between R and P (and the back up lights would be on, but giving it gas did not back it up).

So I checked the forums etc and found there was a recall for something like this (the G28). Had it done on Friday. Drove to work and wouldn't you know it still didn't go into park easily. Dealer was closed before I had a chance to call them back.

I could get it into park every time by stopping, putting it in reverse, backing up about a foot, then putting it into park. So I was just wondering if maybe this has nothing to do with the recall, or, if anyone might know what the issue is? I plan to call the dealer but they might not be open again until Wednesday (with the holiday) so hoping I can figure it out (at least if the recall should have fixed the issue) before then.

Thanks in advance.

the only recall was for a brake shift interlock (only one gearshift related) which was failing and allowing the truck to slip OUT of park into gear and roll away w/ the key out of the ignition, considering that the interlock was the piece replaced i guess it is also possible that it would cause difficulty getting it INTO park, but i would suggest you be ready to really fight for it if you are going to try that route.

Yeah, I might give the dealer a call and see what they say, maybe they can still fix it cheap regardless, or at least tell me what the problem might be. I won't fight them about it though.

Thanks again for the reply shrpshtr325 =)

so I am having a similiar problem = shift lever is difficult only going out of park. Problem started 3 weeks ago, I made an appt. but cancelled because it went away and now it is back. G28 recall was done about 40k ago.

I thought it might be the brake shift interlock, but it isn't like sharp described the problem below. Of course the dealer said if the recall was done it wouldn't be covered under warranty anymore.

Not sure if it a brake issue or shift issue. I try pumping the brake and moving the lever up and down, and it finially goes after 4 or 5 tries. I noticed today that when it releases into reverse there is a slight click on the left side of the steering column.

magoo, your problem is a pretty common one, especially in cold weather, if you pop the rubber shift boot off the column you will see a piece of metal that slides to release the shifter, this is sticking in your truck causing it to be 'stuck' in gear, if you give it a push it will release the shifter, after confirming that this is the issue use a hydrophobic spray lubricant (i like a silicone based lube myself) to re-lube it and work the lock back and forth to work it in, this should take care of your problem
