Default Exhaust smell from AC/htr vents

What would be the cause of an exhaust fume smell coming from the dash vents when I first turn on the heater/air? After the initial turn on, the smell goes away.

It sounds like a simple exhaust leak, the hardest part is going to be figuring out where the leak is coming from exactly on the exhaust.

Where is the air inlet for the heater/vent system? Maybe if I know where that is, I can start my search for the exhaust leak in that vicinity.

Does it make sense to isolate my search on the exhaust system that is forward of the firewall? Or, do I need to exhamine the pipes all the way past the muffler?
