oil press slow to come up
Hi all I am new to the site, I have a 2000 Durango 130k 4.7 engine. Lately my oil pressure is slow to come up on first starts after sitting around 1 hour or overnight. I have counted to 5 sec on some mornings before seeing pressure. Once up the pressure is between 40-60, the engine runs fine. I also here the rockers clicking until the pressure comes up. I have heard some stories about the 4.7 with this many miles having trouble with sludge and killing the engine. I have changed the oil religiously and am looking for any ideas as to what to look at next to keep anything from happening to the engine in the future.
I have just changed the oil and added seafome to see if it will clear out anything slowing the pressure from coming up quicker.
Any ideas will be appreciated.

1) sludge is a myth plain and simple it doesnt happen in any of these engines as long as the recieve a very minimal amount of maintance.
2)how cold is it in the mornings where you live? and what weight of oil is in it?
3)the ticking lifters (actually lash adjusters) is normal for about 30 seconds and will do no harm to the engine
4) 5 seconds is not much wait, ill check mine tomorrow, but i have a feeling that the delay you are seeing is purely electronic lag because these trucks have an electronic sensor to detect pressure instead of a mechanical gauge..
5) dont run more than a couple hundred miles with the seafoam in there, it breaks down any build up, but also breaks down the oil lowering the viscosity and reducing its lubricity

shrpshtr325, thanks for the reply, I am about to drain the seafome out and add back in 10-30 oil with new filter. Im in Seattle and it has been in the high 20's for the last few days but this started before that. It almost like you have just changed your oil and you have to wait a little longer for the oil filter to fill. please let me know ho quick yours comes up for a comparison.
Thanks MJ
Thanks MJ
the 4.7 prefers 5w30, especially if you are consitently getting temperatures below feezing, that could be a part of your issue, i didnt get to check mine today bc my oil pressure sensor is acting up (reading pressure w/t he engine off) next time i get in and the sensor reads 0 i will make a note of how quickly it comes up
my electronic gauge takes 1.5 -2 seconds to come off the peg and show pressure, my actual mechanical gauge comes off the peg almost immediately, but builds much more slowly than the electronic one, my suggestion to you is to test w/ a mechanical gauge if you are unsure.
Well I changed the oil this weekend to some sacrificial 10-30 from Shucks aka the other place. I will run it for a little wile and than drain. I also noticed when I remove the oil filler cap there is the light brown oil coating and some moisture. Is this a sine of the PVC not doing it job and possible plugged up.
