Default possible steering failure symptoms?

high guys ive noticed as of late when im driving i have. i guess you can call it free play. i normally drive holding the steering wheel slightly to the left if i were to move ito to be straight i feel no change in wheel position but as i start to the right i feel the truck kind of stumble? very briefly then itll start to move.

i know this is very confusing its hard to explain what i mean.

what are the symptoms of a failing rack and pinion?

You said the mileage, but not when any maint was done on the steering. Check all the rod ends first. Unlock the steering wheel, then crawl under and wrap your hand around each rod end while a cohort wiggles the steering wheel back and forth a bit. You will feel relative motion between a bad rod end and the arm it's connected to.

I just had my entire front end done and was left with about a 2" gap of play to the right when I drive, to the left shes tight but to the right I got this play & mechanic said it was the steering gear box, or a knuckle.

maybe you have something similar?

I haven't done any steering maintenance. I've had the truck for 5 months. I just did ball joints and then brakes. That's all I've touched on front end.

And @green sounds right I think. I can move the wheel freely a couple inches on left side and get no response but the second I go from holding it straight to the right it moves instantly
