5.9 build?
Looking to swap out the 318 for a 360 in the near future just not sure which would be the best way to go about it.
There are a few 360's around locally that i could pickup for 250-300 bucks. But would it be better to go that route and build it from the ground up, or go buy something already built?
Not looking for crazy hp numbers or anything, just something with a little more.. "kick" then a stock 5.9
Budget wise im looking at about 3-4k for now. The big questions is would it be worth the time to build it myself or would i be better off with something done already and dropping it in?
Of course its also a matter of finding one already built.. not exactly a ton around locally but I would be willing to drive a bit to get one.. or have one shipped to me.. again all just depends on what makes the most sense
so any input would be great! also anyone go with a 390 stroker? been looking into that as well

Personally, i would get a used one and rebuild it myself...
Really it is up to you but i would ask yourself a few key questions first:
1. what is your skill set, do you feel like you are experianced enough to take on a job like this? There is nothing worse than getting way over your head and end up screwing it up worse.
2. Do you have the proper place to work on your truck? Not saying you need a garage to do it but it makes it nice... I spent many years working on cars without one and lets face it working out in the extreme weather (hot or cold) sucks. Also having to cover up everything when you are done working so it stays dry.... Let me not forget the person next to you that has nothing better to do but call the city and inform them of your step by step process of everything part you removed leading them to pester you everyday to clean it up.
3. How quick do you need to get this done? Everyone knows life is what gets in the way every time that you need to get Sh*t done. If its something that needs to be done ASAP then it might be a good idea to let a good trusted shop do it, if you can wait then it be better to do it on your own in your free time..
Bottom line is if you are confident in yourself to build it, have a good place to work on it that won't PO others and you have some time i would recommend building it yourself as you can save yourself alot of $$$ by doing that. Engine building or even automotive repair is not for everyone and its up to you if you wanna take it on... good luck at whatever you choose.

You can check with fastman to see if he got any good readily built engines ready to go.
I talked with Dan "the fastman" a long while back when I was getting pricing on what it will cost to get a 360 stroked to a 408 and push 500hp. He happened to had one. Stroked 360 to 408 with lots of high performance goodies with hp up to 525hp that he was ready to sell to me for around 8k which is a great deal consider a high performance engine.
I seen some OEM dodge dealers sell a high output 5.9 replacement motor that puts out 300 or possible 350 hp. Cannot remember how much. I think it was around 5k-6k
