I just did a tune up on my Rango and I had to replace the valve cover and plenum gaskets . I had a small oil leak. But I put in the E3 diamond spark plugs and I am averaging 16mpg City and like 19-21mpg on the highway. I also only have the 4.7 4x4 so I sure yours wont be that high if you have a 5.9 but try the spark plugs I have. it made a huge difference in power and torque when I hauled a car hauler on there. If your worried about sludge then you might want to take your oil pan down and find out. IF you ignore it your gonna windup replacing the whole moter. thats more expensive to do. good luck man

I put in 8.50 when my gas reading was 0 and the gauge just hit the red empty mark. gas was 3.60 a gallon. it only gave me 12 miles till it was back to 0. so as I figured about 6mpg with a light foot. the console gauge above head says 9.5 to 10.7 mpg but Its no way thats what im getting. I just dont understand. it runs fine. could it be in limp mode? does it even have limp mode? idk im lost just wish I could fine a honda for sale thats not 2 hours away

you have to FILL the tank all the way, drive it, and the FILL it all the way again to calculate your mpg, you cant go by the overhead its all done by calculations based off how much gas it is reading off the gauge, and the gauge in these trucks are not what i would call accurate.

also saying you want to find another car kinda implies that you dontl ike the truck and will get rid of it, thats not going to get you much help on an enthusiast forum, just saying (especially when you are talkinga bout getting an import lol)

i like my durango but I can't afford to spend 3.62 for 6 miles. i live in a small town and will be moving to Oklahoma city soon theres no ways I can afford the mpg this thing is getting and Honda some are reliable and great on gas. never owned a car even but if I can't figure out whats going on i'll have no choice. replacing the 02 sensor seemed too help but bad mileage was back after a week. and when I did the gas tank method I only got 147miles to the tank and half were hwy miles

Default Theres your problem!

The 4.7 can only use the copper core champion plug it came stock with, anything else and will either run like crap or get terrible gas mileage, never ever use a different plug on the 4.7 durango, go get you some copper core champion spark plugs, they are a dollar something a piece!

+1 You need to run copper because of the head. Yes they are the cheapo champion copper OEM plug and gap to .040 before install.

+1 Sharps, You need to actually do fill ups.

When was the last time you changed the filters on your 4.7L 2001 Durango trans? If they are plugged it will do that. Also could be a bad CAT, you can have a back pressure test done at a muffler shop.

Haven t got around to doing a trans change yet, I had the cat pressure and temp gun test on it a few months back. The guy said it was normal but I'm smelling surfer "egg" smell still and worse then last year. It has around 180,000 and the cat looks stock, my plugs all look the same and normal.
