Default Clutch Fan?

So this seems strange to even ask, but I have a 2000 Durango 5.2 that I recently bought, and while servicing it we noticed that it seemed to be lacking a clutch fan...this is not normal correct? It does have the little "backup" electric fan, but it hardly seems big enough to keep everything cool under load by itself. We are not complete noobs at vehicle mechanics so we knew something wasnt right. However when we went to the parts store, the guy couldnt seem to be able to find a clutch fan in the system, leading us to believe that maybe there isnt one? Could someone maybe shed some light on this odd situation?

there is definitely supposed to be a clutch fan, it threads onto the water pump.

Check rockauto.com for the part number, if you went to a national parts store chain they will likely not know what they are looking for, in you case you will likely need the clutch AND the fan for the truck (the fan could come from a junkyard, the clutch i wouldnt suggest doing the same with)

Thats what I thought. I never seen something without one. I thought the fan and the clutch though were the same assembly. I suppose this will make my bad mileage worse and my low power lower

you could always replace the little auxiliary fan with a full sized electric one. I removed my clutch fan and added an electric fan from a taurus (mine never had an electric one). It actually moves significantly more air than the clutch fan ever could, plus it doesn't sap any power from the engine to run.

i disagree with this statement, if you have the measured CFM numbers from BOTH fans please share and i will retract this statement, but in general the clutch fans cool BETTER than an electric fan which is why these trucks came with them especially when set up to tow and put high loads on the engine

Agreed. Electric fans aren't best for daily drivers unless the regained power and efficiency are required. The electric fans to add a dag on the alternator as the electrical system tries to keep up with the draw of the fan, and while it's less of a drag than the fan on the pump...it's not something that will justify it all by itself.

Mechanical fans in proper shrouds that are sealed properly are extremely efficient, and unless an electric fan is really called on there is no need for one.

I don't really plan on towing but I will still be putting one back on there just I case. So far I havnt had overheating issues but it is February in central Washington without any extra load on the motor

I believe Indy has the numbers on the stock fan. My electric fan moves up to 3750 cfm. Compared to my clutch fan (my 99 didn't have a stock electric) this new e-fan performs better in every single aspect, other than making noise of course.
