Dodge Durango Oil Pressure Problem

Dodge Durango Oil Pressure Problem
Q. Hi, I have a 1999 Dodge Durango, 5.2 liter V-8, automatic transmission with 86,500 miles on it. Last month my oil pressure bottomed out to zero. I took it in for repairs and the following have been replaced: Transmission, August 2003, Oil pump, oil sending unit and screen, March 2004. I drove it for two days when I received it after repairs.
The pressure is still fluctuating and occasionally the Check Gauges Light comes on but goes off right away. I noticed that the pressure drops when the vehicle is idling at a light or stop sign. I'm at my wits end with this problem can you help? I don't know what else it could be?
Thanks,
Michelle
A. The first thing I would do is get a true and accurate reading by installing a mechanical oil pressure gauge inline with your original sending unit using a tee fitting. You can find these gauges at most aftermarket parts dealers for a reasonable price.
Monitor the mechanical gauge for readings at idle and at higher RPMS. The 5.2 liter V-8 oil pressure should read, at least, 6 psi at idle and about 30 to 80 psi at 3,000 RPMs. Compare the readings to the factory gauge and you will know that your gauges are working correctly.
If they are accurate you may have a dirty oiling system in your engine. In this case changing your oil and replacing one quart of oil with a quart of ATF to clean your engine could help immensely. Run the ATF for the next two oil changes and change your oil at about ½ of your factory recommended oil change interval.
