Question 4wd issues

I took my Durango to Midas and of course they had a whole list of issues they wanted to fix. They said my transfer case was leaking gear lube. I decided to just live with it. A few months later I accidently put it in 4LO and backed up. When I did it made this terribly popping/grinding noise. Now whenever I try to drive in 4lo or 4hi it does this unless I take off really slow and don't stop suddenly. What would cause this? 2003 Dodge Durango

running the transfer case w/o gear lube in it could cause all sorts of issues w/ it including binding and severe damage, i think you need to rebuild or replace your t-case since you neglected to keep it full of fluid.

also im moving this to the correct section
