Durango Nightmare
Hi All:
We just bought a 25 ft. travel trailer (4,600 lbs.) and wanted a 2002-2004 Dodge Durango but the towing capacities listed online are all over the stratophere.
Can someone please tell me what the 4.7L V8 engine can pull if it has the 3.55 axle ratio? Or, what model/year do I need to safely pull the travel trailer - or is the Durango just too small?
The owner's manual on one said 4,350 which I think is low.
We need to make a decision tomorrow and we're looking at several used Durango's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are asking about two different generations of the Durango. 2002-2003 would be the first generation and it is smaller and does not offer the 5.7 liter Hemi engine. The 2004 is the second generation Durango and it is larger and the 5.7 liter Hemi engine is available. The 2004-2009 second generation Durango with the Hemi would be suffiient to tow your trailer and I have towed my Coronets to car shows with my 2007 Durango (Hemi) without any problems.

the 4.7 with the tow package is capable of towing 5200 lbs or so w/ the 3.55 rear axle ratio,

You should be fine with that, I would go with 3.92 gears though so if you tow through an area with lots of hills it is easier on the drivetrain, actually it is easier on the drivetrain on flat ground too but way noticable on power on the hills.
