Transmission woes

233000+ miles...and counting.
I was driving home from fireworks Thursday night and noticed on deceleration what sounded like gears over-spinning. I got it home and parked it. Friday morning I took it out for a road test. Same thing, over-spinning gear noise on deceleration and some kind of weird clunking in the drive train. I took it straight back home, but when I tried to back it into the driveway, I suddenly had no reverse. When I tried to shift into reverse, all I got was a gear grinding. I still have forward gears. I'm not afraid to tear into this tranny, would just like a few ideas before I start taking things apart.
On the bright side, I needed transportation, so I ran out and bought a 2009 Avenger. It gets a lot better gas millage than the Durango does, but it just won't pull my equipment trailer.

Sounds like it is overhaul time... if your not afraid to tear into it, rebuilding it yourself is ALOT cheaper than having a shop do it....
Yeah, I just discovered something else too. It was parked in my driveway, which is level...luckily. I moved it over to my other driveway which is slightly downhill. Put it in park, opened the door and started to get out, and had to hop back in to stop it. No park. Glad it didn't roll off into the woods yesterday.
I recently rebuilt a 4t65e which is a pretty complicated tranny. The 46re doesn't look as bad, but the direct clutch spring has me concerned. I will have to take it to a shop. I don't have a press that big.

iam NOT a trans expert. but the rev band is used for rev and low. low gear is used in two ways. one with the lever in D you have no braking, rev band is NOT used. chrysler calls it drive-breakaway. with the lever in L you are in low with breaking, rev band IS used. in R you have rev . the rev band is on. with the lever in rev the valve body runs much higher hyd pressure. heres a trick on older trans some times going from P to R it bangs hard. do this pull the lever all the way to L that puts the line pressure to 55 psi. in the low & rev servo. then go to R that puts 230-260 psi that loads the servo less
