Default 2001 Durango "Brain Box" Blues 4.7L

Hello all. First time forum reader and learning a lot! I do have a question about the "brain box" (bcm?) that is located on the drivers side kick panel. I replaced it about a year ago with one from a salvage yard Durango. A mechanic told me that I will need it flashed from a dealership to get my cruise control to work again. Now I think it's affecting my alternator. It's not charging the battery correctly. My battery gauge dives all the way down to low and it dies shortly after. (Btw, replaced the alternator and the battery). I called the dealership and now they are telling me I have to buy a brand new brain box. That I can't flash over this salvaged box I have. Is this true?? Or is the dealership trying to get me to buy an $800 box and then charge me $300 labor? LoL I'm really at a loss. Oh and we put the original brain box back on and the gauge seems to read fine. Durango doesn't die. Any help would be appreciated

Unless I missed it, you didn't specify why you replaced it in the first place. At the end of your post you said you put the original back in, and it ddoesn't die? Then what's the problem? I think I am missing something.

Sorry. We replaced it because it affected my headlights. They were on all the time but dim. When you turned the switch on, my regular headlights would not come on. We thought it was the headlight switch but no, it was that box. We then replaced it with this one from the salvage yard and was told to flash it over with the correct codes at the dealership. But now one of the dealerships is saying I have to buy a brand new box. If I put the old box back in I don't have headlights

So did the salvage yard "brain box" fix the headlight issue, or does it need to be flashed to work at all? Do you know that this box is the cause of the headlight issue?

Yes, the salvage yard box fixed the headlight issue. But I'm hearing from a mechanic that without certain codes being flashed into the new box, I won't have cruise control. Which isn't a big deal but now I'm wondering if it's messing with my alternator. I need to get to a dodge dealership so they can pinpoint exactly what's up. I'm tired of this guessing game. But back to my original question.... Can this salvage box be flashed? One dealership is telling me no and another is saying no. Thanks!

So they are both saying no? I'll assume that's a typo. Unfortunately I couldn't tell you either way, I'm not sure

It CAN be flashed, however it's likely gunna take some work finding someone to do it. Your likely gunna have to do some more researching online and look for a place you can send it, they will flash it and send it back. May be your only option if you can't find anyone local.
