Default Engine replace

Hi

we have 2002 Dodge Durango with bad engine. We looked up at junk yard and found 2004 Durango that has engine. Would 2004 engine work on 2002? I have been researching and read something about 16 teeth vs 32? Thanks

my guess it is has a 4.7l engine in it since the same engine is in an 02 and an 04 and iirc thats the only engine w/ carryover btwn gens.

as for will it work, the 32 tooth tone ring on the 2002 models had a 4 plug PCM in it, and the 16 tooth tone ring paired with the 3 plug PCM, if you have a 4 plug PCM the 04 engine SHOULD work in your truck, if you have a 3 plug PCM you need an 02 or older engine (with 3 plug PCM)

Thank you for your help. Next question is where do I look to see if I have 3 or 4 plug PCM?

you look at the PCM and count how many plugs are going into it, the PCM is located on top of the passenger side fender in the engine bay
