Default 01 Durango noises, bearings?

when driving at low speeds there is a sound of like bearings or something somewhere from mid to rear, girlfriends dad said something about a bearing he can see that has 4 ball bearings rolling around and they need greased because there is nothing to keep water or dirt out, this don't sound right to me, I haven't jacked it up to look yet, was just wandering if anyone had this noise? is there a carrier bearing on these? Also, there is a problem with the 4wd, when its engaged there is a grinding noise, and when you have the wheels turned and backing up it sounds like something is catching, do these have cv shafts? Her dad said something about a small black box with 4 bolts on the front end needs replaced to fix the 4wd, said it runs about $18.00, lol I know its its not much help, Im not sure if the light changes from 2wd to 4 or not, but he said it does engauge

Jack it up and have a look. Rotate things, check the drive shaft u-joints too. You'll have to be in neutral and have a the tires off the ground to rotate things check it well, so be careful! DO NOT use the motor to make things spin!
