oil pressure
2003 slt 4.7: today my wife was driving the durango when the oil pressure gauge went low and the warning beeper came on to check gauges, the gauge was in the red, she revved the motor above idle and the pressure went up. I have not been able to get it to do it again, could this be an oil pump failing, she said there was no ticking or any weird noises like you would get with no pressure, anybody experience this before?
first off, apologies to moderators for not posting in right section, I did have the gauge go down today while driving the durango, no ticking or any weird noises that go with no pressure, thinking maybye the oil sending unit going bad. any ideas out there?
Very possible if it's not ticking or knocking or running extremely rough like it would if it actually had no oil pressure. I wouldn't drive it until I were 100% sure and fixed the problem though. You don't want to take the chance of your motor not getting proper lubrication while running. As rare as it is for an oil pump to fail, it does happen. Or more possible, something was floating around in the oil pan and the pump sucked it into the sump screen and got clogged. Hook a mechanical oil pressure gauge up to the truck to confirm the oil pressure is actually present and within specs. And then go from there
This happened to me. The pressure would go to zero, go back up, go all the way to zero again. Red message light on the dash, etc. I got all the usual advice that I had to change the brand of oil, change oil, and all that mess. What we finally figured out was that the oil pickup tube, in the bottom of the oil pan, was clogged. When we finally had the oil pan dropped, I saw with my own eyes the clogged pickup tube. This is common for our 4.7 Durangos I am sorry to say.
I had the mechanic install a redesigned pick up tube, and it changed the way the oil pressure behaved, but it worked.
Good luck
David
