2001 Durango 4.7 OHC. Very hard starting, sounds out of time. Onset was run hot but didn't peg & shut down. Have pulled it down all 4 timing marks dead nuts, compression good & replaced fuel pump had very low pressure. If this had been a distributor engine with same sound I would have moved distributor. Could this be the cam or crank sensor ... not familiar with these. Old school Thnx

 

It could be one of the two sensors you mentioned. Or it could be both. Not sure. Any check engine codes? Read *Here* for more info on how to check the codes without the use of a scanner, and to cross reference the codes you pull from your truck to the ones in the index. Doing this will tell you what sensors, if any, are acting up

 

Not spitting any codes, battery has been disconnected & has not run enough to generate new codes. Anyway to test sensors?

 

There is a way to test sensors by testing resistance in them, however I'm not sure on the acceptable specs.

On another note, oddly enough, the coolant temp sensor has given me problems starting and running before. Being it's been overheated, check into that maybe too while your looking at the camshaft and crankshaft sensors. Unplug all 3, one at a time and test starting and running the motor

 

That's actually a really good idea with the coolant sensor. My grandpap had something very similar happen with his silverado 454 when it's coolant temp sensor went bad.

 

Ok this is where I am now replaced crank & cam sensor, unplugged Engine Coolant sensor still engine sounds like it wants to start just not hitting right almost kicks off then fades away & now spitting a P0118 code, at least I'm seeing a code finally. have a feeling it comes from trying to start with Engine Coolant sensor unplugged. All help welcomed Thnx

 

Yeah, that code's for the coolant temp sensor.
