just purchased a 98 Durango 4x4,the trans. will run threw all gears but will not pull at the rear wheels, I drop it in 4low or 4high it will drive fine. I put in 2 wheel you can feel it run threw, when you try to put it in park you can hear the parking sprag chatter? is this problem in the transfer case?

 

Sounds like the transfer case since it is fine in 4x4... I would start simple and try adjusting the 4x4 linkage and see if that helps.. you may get lucky and that is all that is.

 

Sounds like you've got something wrong between your transfer case and your rear diff (including the rear diff and transfer case).

You did visually check the rear drive shaft and rear diff. and observed no issue? That would be my first suspect of course, but a broken drive shaft and/a blown rear diff would be obvious. A rear diff would cause a lot of racket and moaning, and obviously the drive shaft is self explanatory.

If you start messing around with the transfer case, make sure it's not something overly simple first. If it is not, let me know what all you observe and we can give you some more advice.
