Try replacing the TPS sensor and remove and thoroughly clean the throttle body.

Hi, I have an 01 durango with the 4.7 that was giving me issues like that all of a sudden. Especially on cold starts. The engine would rev itself up to 1200 rpms then drop down to normal...and back and forth until engine got a bit warmed up. Then it was better but still idled a bit weird at stop signs, etc. Tested both the IAC and TPS. Got a good solid readong off the IAC, but the TPS seemed iffy. So I spent 35 bucks on a TPS, Swapped it out in less than 10 minites, and it runs awesome now. Starts and idles where it's supposed to, adjusts perfectly when I turn things on and off, seems to have solved the problem.
