Default Brain picking time

Time for me to redo the exhaust system. Currently running PPH Headers into a high flow Pypes cat, then a Flowmaster 40 Series.

When I remounted my four back shocks due to the lift on the D, I had to cut the tail pipe. So now it comes out about a foot from the muffler and is making one of the shocks pretty nasty with soot.

I will fab up my own system, going back with new stainless pipe and tig welding it all up. That's the easy part. Figuring out what system I want is the hard part. lol!

I see the majority of owners have their systems dualed from the muffler out. Essentially a cat back system.

Does anyone here run a dual system with the X-pipe, the tow cats, two mufflers and out?

If so, where do you cram all the extra parts at? The fuel tank owns the D's undercarriage. I just do not see the room under there for everything needed.

Now for those with two pipes from the muffler back, is there any difference in the way it sounds over a single pipe back?

It seems that building the system from the cat back would be the easiest way to go. Just gotta figure out if I want dual back or single back.

Current sad state of system. You can see where it blackens the shock.

I burned all the ceramic coating off the PPH Headers a couple years ago. So a buddy of mine will re ceramic coat them and the y-pipe at his shop.

I'd imagine that if you were going for a true dual setup you'd have to run both pipes where the factory one is now. Sounds like it would be a tight squeeze.

When i was panning out my Flowmaster 70 series install, i had the same issue of going single or dual. I went to a few muffler shops and talked to them about it. Finally i went to talk to the original owner of a popular muffler shop here in town that has been open since long before i was born. He basically told me the same thing the other shops did.. Duals look really cool but, the only real thing your going to do (over a single system) is make the installers pocket a little heavier. If you had a high horsepower engine setup for racing you would benefit more from a dual system but, for a everyday driver a single system is fine..

Yea, going with a single 3" out from the cat back. Ran into a snag yesterday when I went to the shop. My buddy said we don't have a bender that can handle the stainless.

So my wife is going to check with hers guys at her job to see if they have one. If now, then I either have to order different bent pieces or pay a muffler shop to install it all, which I don't want to do.

I seem to have read an article somewhere on the internets where a shop did testing on our 5.9 with true duel and without, and they actually came up with a small loss of performance with duel. I wish I could give you the link but my alcohol addled brain cant recall it.

If you cant find anyone local to bend the stainless for you, then you be better off ordering a cat back system with the mandrel bent stainless. I have flowmaster's cat back kit p/n 817208 and so far i love it and has lived up to what they claim.
