This past week i had to replace the left outer tir rod. Later when driving i heard a slight knocking. I stopped and looked/listened and seems louder inside the suv. Can still hear it outside but better inside. Seems to be more on the left side and can hear it at the wheel well. It comes and goes. What you guys think. BTW it is a 2001 with a 4.7 and 4wd. I have heard a timing chain, something broke and i looked at the oil and was ok and the gauge was normal. Anyone else have this happened to them thanks

 

Does it REALLY sound like the wheel well? If it does, it might be your wheel bearing(s). I had that happen, took my D into the shop and ended up replacing both. The driver side was destroyed and pass side wasn't looking fabulous. There was a recall a while back for wheel bearings too if I remember correctly.

I don't think there was ever a recall for wheel bearings.

Listen underneath and see if you can pinpoint more where the sound is coming from, that would help us with making a better guess.

 

Yes there was a recall on them wheel bearings a while back, along with the ball joints.

 

Ball joints yes, but I'm almost positive the wheel bearings were never recalled.
