Engine oil question
Hey folks...want to share some info I have. I have a 01 durango 5.9 which runs tight and quiet. no probs. always used mob1, but in 5w20 instead of 10w30. A mech buddy of mine knows that the ports and tubes in this engine as well as oil screen r too small. A lighter syn oil will ensure good flow and less carbon...keeping temps down and getting oil to valve train faster. Just dont lollygag along for 4000 miles. Unless u use a high mileage oil filter. U have to decide if u want to buy expensive oil or a new motor. Also, another hint...oil pumps do not create pressure...moving parts do. good oil flow=good pressure. Always, always give the motor a minute on startup to get oil flowing...if comsuming oil...check the pcv valve which should be checked every 6 months or so...180,000 miles on this dango...hope she stays with me a while longer.

I have a 02 5.9 RT. I use Mobil 1 high mileage in my Durango in 10w40. It has 226,000 miles on it and counting. I had the timing chain replaced last month because the seal around it was leaking. It runs smooth and has great pick up. Before that I was running Royal Purple. Even though it runs great, Lately, I have had to add a quart or two of oil between oil changes. Is there something I can do short of a engine rebuild, or add that can cut down on the burn off? I added a new heavy duty fan clutch which helps keep the engine cooler than before. I've heard about many different additives and different oils with different results. Does anyone have any suggestions? I just want to keep the RT rolling.
Check the PCV valve in case it's bad. Other than that there's not much you can do. At 226,000 miles you're going to be burning some oil. I have 168,000 miles on mine and burn a quart every 2000 miles, so depending on how long you go on an oil change that doesn't sound too bad. My dad has a bunch of old cars with GM V8s and well over 300,000 miles and they burn a quart every 1000 miles or so. As long as it's not to bad you can go years by just adding oil to it. If anything you're keeping the oil cleaner all the time. People that tell you that you need to rebuild the engine as soon as it starts burning oil are crazy.
Hey Jrkyle...the 5.9s are known to use a little oil so don't sweat it. If the oil on the stick is burned or there is varnish on the stick, then it is time to reeval the oil u r using. I was using Mobil, but went from adding a quart every 3000 to a quart and a half. I can take a hint...she wants something thicker. I switched to Valvoline Maxlife Blend, since it is thicker than the synth and in the 10w30 flavor. Unbelievable how smooth and quiet the engine is and mileage is up 2mpg. replaced pcv also. Too soon to see if she is burning as much, but I was really more concerned about sludge from the carbon. Valvoline is a very stable oil and I used it racing modifieds in school so I trust it. Dont, dont, dont use additives, they r a gimmick and could react with your oil and create acids which will create sludge. Its all about sludge...gotta keep it off the oil screen or its game over.
Depends on the additives, myself, my dad, and my grandpap always use a bottle of STP with their oil, and they have a bunch of cars (both Mopar and GM) that have well over 300,000 miles on them and still run just fine with good oil pressure. We've always used Wolf's Head 10w30 oil, but I've been using Castrol high mileage the past couple of years in my Durango due to Wolf's Head not being readily available where I go to school.
A couple months back I had an oil analysis report done on an oil sample taken from my Durango. It came back showing that the engine is in good shape, along with the oil itself being in good shape (with the STP added to it too). You can see too that the STP being thick makes the oil come out at a viscosity more along the lines of 10w40. I still have excellent oil pressure too.

Interesting. I have a 2001 Durango 4.7 with about 125,000 milage. I use 5 w 30 i think that is it or maybe 5 w 20. Which is it? I have used Castrol for yrs and i had a 96 Maxima and on that forum they was saying Mobil was very good. So i changed oil and used it for many yrs. I have checked around to see what to use. I have heard that Valvoline or Haveoline would brake down fast so i never used them. Have used Pennzoil a few times and Castrol and Mobil in the Durango. A few times i used high milage and was going to keep using it. I read somewhere that it may/can clog up the motor so i stoppedBut some months ago i got a ticking sound and 1 mechanic said the lifter and use MMO so i did(seems like it is back but not as bad. Have used other oil treatment also before and yrs ago used STP,Restore and MMO na da few times Seafoam.
