Default handling question

I have a 2003 SLT 4.7liter Durango.

I've noticed in the year that I've been driving it that when I hit potholes, the rear end seems to fishtail slightly, especially if I hit this pothole or bump on a turn on a highway. I have to quickly regain control any time it happens.

This is my first non-car so I am wondering if this is normal for all large SUVs/trucks, if it is common for the Durango, or if there is something unusual about this?

Nothing unusual about that happening at all. The rear axle will definitely jump around on you from time to time especially when cornering and hitting a bump at highway speeds.

Any idea on how old your shocks are?

A new pair of shocks would mitigate the problem!
