Default 2003 Durango 4.7

I was gonna purchase a Durango but when I test drove it the engine was ticking when I accelerated and it would shake when slowing down or to a stop. What kind of repairs am I looking at? I assume the problems are unrelated. Is it worth spending 3000 on it and making the repairs? Just looking for friendly advice and knowledge. Thanks everyone.

Little more detail please. Shaking while braking or just coasting? 4.7's are notorious for lifter tick, so it may be normal. Your best bet is to take it to a good mechanic for an inspection if you are that concerned. There is no way to diagnose your description properly over the internet. You need to decide if it is worth it or not.

The tick could also be broken manifold bolts, not always a lifter issue. A good mechanic could determine which might be the case here.

As for the shake, that could be brakes, or bad ball joints or tie rod ends, or a bad alignment. A good mechanic or suspension shop could determine which might be the case here.

Without the ability to diagnose the issues (as jkeaton says above), there is no way to tell what the repair costs might be.

You never indicated how many miles are on it or what trim level? Also is it 2WD or 4WD. What options does it have? All these factor into the value.

Are you looking at this on a sales lot or a private party?

Its got 190k on it. Slt AWD with the 4x4 option. The shaking only occurs when braking. I was purchasing it from a licensed dealer but he is a friend of mine. Not sure if any of this helps. I'm in upstate New York for one more winter so I was really hoping this Durango was the real deal.

If it shakes when braking I'd suspect warped rotors.

I think I'm gonna go for it. It shouldn't be anything I can't do myself. I know helicopters better than I know automobiles. Thanks everyone. I will come back if I need some guidance.

We have a 2001 Durango with the 4.7 motor and it has/had a tick. A mechanic told me to use Marvel Mystery Oil and should go away. It did
