Question 1998 Dodge Durango 5.9L cranks but will not start

Here is a list of everything I have checked:
  • You can hear the fuel pump kick on (original fuel pump was replaced about 6 months ago)
  • Tried swapping the Fuel Pump Relay with another
  • Tried swapping the Auto Shutdown Relay with another
  • Fuel rail has pressure and fuel (checked at schrader valve)
  • Tried spraying starting fluid into intake, did not respond
  • pulled one spark plug and it had a bright white spark when cranking
  • checked the top wire connection on the ignition coil, was rusty, cleaned it, still no change
  • tried starting while jumped to another vehicle to eliminate a battery issue
  • checked with OBD II scanner tool, no error codes
Read a lot of contradicting suggestions on other web sights. Some say it might be the ignition coil or crank sensor. Others would contradict that saying that if it was a bad crank sensor the ignition coil would not fire. Since I do see spark, I am assuming the crank sensor and ignition coil are ok?

Looking for suggestions,
Thanks.

Just cause you have spark does not mean it has enough to start. Does it even sputter? Also did the spark plug smell of fuel? I would check to make sure your injectors are firing. Although if you had good spark it should've tried to start just on the starting fluid alone.

BTW nice name.

+1 on the name.

1. Bright white on the coil is not good. Sounds like a coil, cap and rotor, or wire issue to me.
2. Try to open the throttle blade and give her a short spray while someone else cranks the motor. If that doesn't work ensure time.
3. Index the distributor to ensure you didn't break a timing change or slip a tooth. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...er-please.html

There should be about 50 psi fuel at the valve, spark should be blue and on time.

Yea, Tesla was one of the great minds for sure.

I'm going to try replacing the ignition coil, its fairly easy to do and would at least eliminate that item from the list.

+1 to what hydra said and +1 to Nikola Tesla, definitely one of the greatest minds of recent history, and a shame that he's mostly forgotten nowadays.

I'm having the same problem with my 5.9L 2000, same diagnostics performed but I added a Noid light test to make sure my injectors were getting a firing signal, noid says they are.

I put an inductive timing light on the #1 plug and the light didn't fire. To check it again I pulled the plug wire on #1 and put a 1/4 socket extension in it, then cranked the engine. I got a yellow spark. I pulled the coil wire from the distributor end and repeated the test, same yellow spark.

It can't be the crank position sensor or I wouldn't have a signal on the injectors and I wouldn't see spark at the distributor. I'm thinking a weak coil. Anyone ever heard of a coil just suddenly going from good to bad before? The truck was running fine, I parked it for three days and now it doesn't start, but I have fuel, air and spark. I have a coil on order but I'm not sure I've diagnosed it completely. Are there any other things I should be checking? MAF?

Baffled in Boulder Creek.

PS: No scan codes other than the P1491 I've had since I bought the truck (another issue, unrelated)

Changing the ignition coil fixed the problem!
Fired right up on the first crank after changing it.

Thanks guys!

1. Yellow is bad and it could by your coil wire is bad. Maybe time to put new wires on it or it's a bad coil.
2. Yes coils go out all of a sudden.

Timing would be the next thing to check. You could "index" it to see. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...er-please.html

It was in fact the coil wire. I was thrown off a bit because my spark tester doesn't connect directly to the coil, only at the distributor end of the wire. With bad spark at the wire, I replaced the coil. No improvement. Replaced the coil wire and it started right up.

The lesson of this story is get a good spark tester you can connect to the coil directly.
