Default Dome Light Switch bad or is it my CTM?

My 01 Durango has had an issue with the dome lights for a couple years (maybe longer.) Occasionally when I close the doors the dome light will not shut off. It will stay on full bright, never dimming or shut off. If/when I notice this I have to roll the dimmer down then back to the normal position I always leave it in. Then it seems to work as it should. This has been the same for a long time now. I just kind of put up with it thinking that if it was the CTM then eventually something else would show up. Nothing else has shown, although I do have another occasional issue with the passenger door window. Not sure if they are related.

So does this sound like a switch issue? Or a CTM problem?

Sounds like a door switch. Unfortunately it is in the locking mechanism if I recall correctly. This means you have to replace the whole thing.

Passenger door window sounds more like a master switch going out. You might be able to remove it, open the housing and clean the contacts. Or you can replace it.

Have a similar issue with my 03 only it's that the interior lights won't come on when opening either of the back doors. Front doors and lift gate work OK.
Notice there was a TSB for door lock cylinder switches but rear doors don't have door lock cylinders.

Default Light Switch

As a bit of followup for anyone having the same issue.

I replaced my light switch. Local O'Rilleys had one in stock for $50.00 out the door. I figured it was worth a try rather than have to pay the stealer to program my CTM if I tried it first.

So the jury is still out as to weather or not the switch really fixed the issue. So far it seems to have fixed it. But the problem was so intermittent that I won't be confident for a while. I will say that since changing the switch my dome lights have shut off every time. I have gotten in the habit of watching to be sure they go out, just in case. Previously I would find that the dome lights had stayed on for extended times, even overnight. So I'd say at least so far I'm glad I replaced the switch first. It seems to have fixed the problem, and if the issue returns then it will be time for a CTM.

My Durango just rolled over 218K so not sure where to draw the line on repairs. Best part is I still like the car, and it's been paid for for so long I don't remember. Hope to make it to 300K.

Cheers,
Ron

I had a similar issue where my done light would not turn off even if I turned off at the switch. I had to remove the fuse to turn it off. I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes to reset the CTM and the problem was gone.

Thank you bmaco. I will give that a try. I should have returned and reported that I have seen this issue since replacing the switch. It has happened twice since then. Both times the weather temps were very cold, below 20 *F. Not sure if that is of importance, but does seem to have some significance.

Bummer! Starting to think maybe it is the door switch. But first I'll try the reset.
