Question Acronym Abyss. PCM, ECM, BCM all the CM's

Been having some issues with a '00 Durango SLT 4x4, 5.9L. Lots of electrical. alarm, window, mechanical gauge, radio issues. After a great amount of searching, reading, testing and listening I have determined that one of my *CM's is having issues. I have learned that the previous owner bought a used BCM (his explanation) from ebay. Since BCM's can only be paired with a vehicle once, and given lots of other indicators, I was set to replace it with a new one. The issue is the location. All I have read indicates that the module is either on the fender in the engine compartment (actually the PCM), or behind the kick panel in the driver foot well. Nope, the module he replaced is behind and to the side of the glove box. Any ideas as to which *CM this is? ECM, PCM, TCM, BCM....?

What he replaced is called the CTM (central timing module).

The Central Timer Module or CTM is just another name for a body computer. This module controls many of the vehicles electrical systems such as.....

  • Automatic Door Locks
  • Battery Protection
  • Central Locking
  • Chimes
  • Door Lock Inhibit
  • Enhanced Accident Response
  • Exterior Light Features
  • Interior Light Features
  • Intermittent Wipe Control
  • Panic Mode
  • Programmable Features
  • Remote Keyless Entry
  • Remote Radio Switch Interface
  • Speed Sensitive Intermittent Wipe Control
  • Vehicle Theft Security System

Default Next step

Hit the local Pick-n-Pull yard and picked up a used CTM for $30.
Same issues as before. Durango starts and will run, but NO BUS error in odometer, and no gauges among other things. Going to run back and swap it out for a PCM, as the consensus seems to be that there is a failure in either the PCM or one of the sensors.

Yes it does sound like a PCM issue, just keep in mind that while you can swap them out to test it you will need to have the new PCM flashed at the dealer with your VIN number.

Would not flashing the PCM with the VIN and mileage cause an issue? My reason for asking is that on my parents 99, 5.2L the PCM went bad and I ordered a used one off of eBay and we replaced it, its work since without any issues, but we never did have it flashed by the dealer.

CTM can be swapped between vehicles. Now....the build config may cause weird things to not work but it will start and run.
