I had a problem for a while where my engine would shut off sometimes when driving and other times when sitting at lights or something stop sign. Turned out to be a bad crankshaft position sensor.

Default 2000 Durango with similar problem

I have a 2000 Durango SLT V8 Magnum 5.9. 97777 miles on it. For about 6 months when I would go somewhere fine, get back to the car and it wouldn't start. I'd call my husband and he would come and it would start. So now when it happens I would just wait awhile before making a call to him and it would eventually start after 20 min or so. Now it just shuts off sometimes while I'm driving, I try to get off the road and wait until it feels like starting again. The shutting down while driving is a new thing, but it happens every time now. I had it in the shop on 2 different occasions, and they can't get it to replicate the symptoms. Like it's a ghost or something. I picked it up from the shop today and it drove fine. It was kinda cool and no sun today, so I'm wondering if it's a heat issue with something. I'm on the MS Gulf Coast, very hot here. My husband wants to get rid of it, but I don't. I JUST NEED TO HELP HIM FIND SOME ANSWERS , so he can fix it when he does get an off day. I only drive it once or twice a week, and I don't go but a mile or 2 before it shuts off. Thanks for any suggestions!

Probably either the coil or the crank sensor.

Thank you very much! Will try that before we go the PCM route. Sounds cheaper.

Usually you'll get the "no bus" message on the dash when it dies if the pcm is the problem.

next time it happens put a bag of ice on the PCM, if its the PCM overheating issue that will get it going again in a shorter period of time, you didnt specify what color your D was, but if its a darker color its a pretty common issue with them in the pre 2000 models.

that_guys suggestions are also valid places to check, especially the heat sensitive coil (it does sound like its heat related to me)

Honestly, I get in a slight panic mode when it stalls on me on the road, so I never knew to look for "no bus" But I'll have my husband look for it. Does it just flash, or stay there? My Durango is all WHITE, just has black pin strips and rain guards, but it is in the sun all day. Has to be heat related, it always cranks in casino parking garages, in the garage at the shop, it only happens in hot parking lots and driving on hot days. Thanks to both of you for your help! My husband will be working on it this weekend.
