My 2003 4.7 Durango began running rough yesterday so checked the codes on it today. Pulled a P308 which indicates a cylinder 8 misfire. Went to remove the nut that holds down the ignition coil and it turned and turned forever. Finally noticed that the whole shaft was coming up and the nut had not loosened at all. Sprayed some Liquid Wrench on it and held onto the shaft with vise grips and the nut broke loose. After that the coil pulled tight out. Thought I would check out the plug so tried removing it but had issues with the plug wrench engaging the hex on the plug. Tried several times to get the socked to work and finally one time when I pulled the socked out I noticed something up inside of it. Turns out it was a small piece of the rubber boot at the end of the coil that fits down over the insulator of the plug. Went over to the bench to look at the original coil and sure enough there is no rubber boot on the end of it at all. The pieces are apparently still down in with the plug. I repeatedly tried to get any more out of it to no avail. I cannot really see down in there at all except I can see the very top of the plug. I stuck a small hook shaped wire down to try and get any more of the stuff out, but no success. Anyone have any ideas? I still can't get the plug wrench to engage the plug and at this point don't know it that is a good idea since I don't need that stuff to fall down into the cylinder if/when I can get the plug out. Anyone ever run into this before? thoughts would be appreciated.
