Default Help on 2000 Durango 5.9L Oil Capacity and Dipstick

Hey guys/gals...I'm doing an engine swap on my 1990 Vert Dakota....Putting in a 5.9L Magnum. To clear my cross member I had to go with a 2000 Durango Oil Pan. I've read the FAQ and it says 5 Qts of Oil for a 2000 5.9 Durango. Is that correct? Also, could anyone be so kind as to measure the length of their oil dipstick. I'll have to cut/weld a new one for my setup, but it should be the same as a 2000 Durango.

5 qts is what my 98 5.9 takes. Put about 3.5 in, check dipstick, add until full. Run engine for 30 seconds. Wait 2 minutes check again then add until full but should be right about 5 qts. I can't measure the stick at the moment because I'm not at home. If I remember when I get home I'll put pics up.

Thanks guys! I saw that one dipstick on rock auto but when it said it was for a 48RE I thought it was a transmission dipstick. It looks longer than my old 3.9 dipstick which is too long now for my setup. I'm thinking maybe the problem is my oil tube is too short. Hmmmm. The oil tube came with the 5.9 which is a crate mopar performance engine. Wonder if they weren't stock length for some reason. How far does your guys tube come up....is it below above or middle of alternator?

Rock Auto sells both the tube and stick combo. Don't overthink it. Just buy the right stick+tube combo for that year and move on.

Yeah probably right....when you do a frame off restore you get tired of buying every little part...all adds up. But I guess bite the bullet

It bolts to the side of the alternator bracket. It's about the middle of the alternator if I remember right. That being said, having had a 3.9 and then a 360 almost everything is interchangeable but I guess the oil pan would be different thus requiring a different dip stick.

Another approach that wouldn't involve us... just put in a 5qt jug, start it to fill the filter, turn if off, and put a stick down your present tube. Wherever it shows is the right level.
