Was looking online and saw this and thought it might be a fun project. I'm not a street racer and I'm not expecting crazy results or anything. Just thought the truck would breathe a little better with this and maybe sound a little nicer.
I'm thinking that I remove the stock filter and filter box...and remove the piping and elbow before the Throttle Body. I couple the the "Y" fitting right into the Throttle Body. I then add some piping between the "Y" and the cone filters to space it away from the engine (thus hopefully reducing heat from the engine warming up the air in the Intake). I'm not expecting a cold air intake or anything...but I figure adding a foot or two of pipe between the "Y" and the cone filter would be better.
That's a hot air intake. Won't do a thing besides add noise and underhood bling.
Looking at the cold air intake kits online...the ones for several hundred bucks...they don't seem that much more advanced. The only difference I see is that the pipe between the fitting and the filter is a bit longer (which I was considering adding anyway). Some have the heat shield around the filter...which I would consider as well...but it's still pulling in warm air from the engine compartment. Is that acccurate? I suppose if you position the air filters/intakes futher away from the engine, where outside air is being fed in...that would consider it "cold air intake". But couldn't I just use the above short intake system and extend the pipes away from the engine a bit?
The hotter air you suck in the potentially worse engine performance you will have. The true cold air kits actually seal off on the hood when you shut it and can actually get cooler air from outside the hood. A little ingenuity and a K&N drop in will probably do better for you than these hot air intakes like the one pictured. I'll get a link to the build I did on my 5.9.
