Question Throttle Valve Cable Replaced but not secured

Hi. i replaced the entire throttle valve cable on my 1998 Durango 5.9L SLT. i did the best i could to route the new cable along the same path of the original. But....the original cable was fastened to the chassis at several different points. i have been unable to replace those fasteners. So, new cable is not secured to the vehicle at all. Does this effect the functioning of the cable? I have been able periodically to make adjustment at the throttle body connect point that result in very smooth shifts of the transmission. But mostly, it gets out of whack and results in very sporadic shifts....especially at lower speeds around town.
fyi: i did read the permalink on Transmission Diags. i am basically looking for a starting point in the diag process.
Thank you. And Happy Independence Day weekend!
