Exclamation Low compression on drivers side

SO i have a 2000 dodge durango 4.7L I bought it with a misfire on cylinder 8 i was told it was a fixable mis and not permanent, i bought a fuel injector for that cylinder but before i could put it in i just stopped running while i was driving. it sounded like it made a popping noise. now it will not start as easily as it used to when being started it pops and almost seems like its looking for fuel but once started it will run while pushing the gas pedal but once you try to put it in gear she dies... we've checked the fuel pump and it seems to be working fine... we did a compression test and the passenger side was reading 125 the driver side was reading 40 my husband believes its the timing he does have more mechanical experience than i do but i have a feeling that its the heads... when driven up a steep canyon the first week i had it it had smoke on the engine and a weird smell but seemed to be fine once i pulled over and let it cool down i then two weeks later drove it up a steeper hill while pulling a 6ft trailer and it started to over heat and blow smoke through the tail pipe with the same weird smell... i slowly took it up the hill and then let it cool down completely and continued my 8 hour journey....

im just really curious what may be going on with my vehicle so i can buy the right part rather than wasting money on parts i dont need!!!!

is the smoke out the exhaust white?

it almost sounds like you have either a cracked head or a bad headgasket and coolant is getting into the cylinder. this would explain the low compression, white smoke, poor idle/misfire, hard/no start, and an unusual smell and overheating problems.

usually this is accompanied by low coolant, but it is possible for the pressure in the cylinder to keep the coolant in the coolant passages.

when you replace headgaskets you have to reset timing on the 4.7 anyway and headgaskets arent expensive, i would replace the headgaskets at this point and reset the timing while in there, if it jumped i would expect the same compression on all cylinders of one bank (or both banks, depending on which of the 3 chains jumped) if you open it up and find that it jumped a tooth then either the chain is very worn (unusual unless this is a very high milage motor we are looking at) or the guide/tensioners arent working properly (more common).

i will note that jumped timing is not a common issue on these trucks since they use chains
