Default 2009 Dodge Journey Defrost

I have a 2009 Dodge Journey. All has been well during this winter and the heat works great but the other day after a heavy snow I got in and turned the defrost on and left it. When I came back there was ice on the windshield on the inside and light snow on the dash. This eventually melted off when the heat went up in the car but now I have a layer of dirt/dust on my windshield and dash board. This has never happened before and now happens every time. Was wondering what it might be so I don't have to wipe dusty water off of my dash every time I need to defrost.
