Default Power Steering problem?

Alright, I'm actually brand new to this forum, and I'm posting for my brother. He has a Dodge Durango (01) 5.9L?. He says that the car is leaking some fluid up front (probably not the radiator), and when he turns - he gets a whooo or a whooshing sound like a motor struggling, or to that effect. There is no warning light on yet, and his turning is still powered. His buddy said he had the same problem, and the stealership charged him 800 dollars to fix it. If anyone has had the same problem, some DIY tips would be great, and perhaps a part list and where to get it. I plan on helping him fix it this Christmas, but I'm a German car owner - a bit different. Thanks for the responses in advance, and if you have any furthur questions about what's wrong, i'll try to answere ASAP. Thanks!

Edit: I used the search button, but got nothing useful.

Sounds like a possible power steering leak? Maybe pump making all the noises? Since it is a 01 model, have your rack and pinion inspected. I had mine replaced while under warranty because it was making some rattle sounds when turning or going over bumps while turning.
