It happened to my 98 Durango 4x4 5.2, I went to junk yard, removed cover from one of Durangos there and found same problems!!!!
1.Inner clutch disc broken
2.retainers broken
3.pieces of retainer cut groove in carrier bearing clamp.
Most likely problem 1 leads to 2, then 2 leads to 3.
