Default Transmission slipping

I have a 1998 Durango with a 5.2. Transmission had been leaking for some time now. Enough to get the level low enough for the trans to slip in OD. I noticed it about the time I was going to service it. Changed the filter wound up replacing 7.5 quarts of trans fluid. The trans still slips in OD not bad but still slips. I’ve pull trailers with it not very often and not very far. I would keep it out of OD till I got up to speed then hit the button. If it seemed to pull well I would leave it in, if it struggled I would take it out of OD. I did pull a ton of brick in the spring but that was in town at low speeds. My question is. How do I find out if it’s the torque converter or trans? I have noticed in the past the torque converter would stay locked when coasting sometimes for a couple days. Without taking it in is there a way to identify what is causing the slipping?

Probably damage in the form of worn out parts due to running with low ATF. Towing in that state hastens things along. How low did it get?

The dip stick has the checked normal range then a little below that it says add and has a circle by it, it got down that low. Slipped for a week driving 90 miles a day before I relized what it was and the cause.

Am I better off running it until it goes bad? Or having the transmission rebuilt right away?
