I posted this in my project thread but thought I'll start a new thread regarding this issue.
Using the Rock Auto parts look up, I ordered EngineTech # ERV1432 valve springs but come to find out, my engine does NOT have Conical 0.635" I.D. valve springs. But Conical is the only valve spring choice on Rock Auto. Anyone seen this before? I.D. of my original spring is 0.845".
Pic of valve springs. EngineTech # ERV1432 on left with original retainer on top. Original spring on right...
I got Mopar springs when I did mine. 2003 Dakota. Dug up an old pic of mine and they look conical. Part # 53020749AC.
I know there were changes throughout the years for the 4.7L but I don't know if the earlier versions had different valve springs. Try shopping on a Mopar site using your VIN and see what it pulls up. Maybe you can just get new retainer caps that fit the conical springs. Those are 4781090AA and in case you need it, the retainer locks are 53022277AA. Those are part numbers from my receipts.

Thanks Dodgevity!
I did a bit of internet digging. MoparPartsGiant has about the best price shipped that I could find. So the newer style retainers are on the way. Some of the sites list the application range as 2001-2011. I also found a Jeep Cherokee owner in the Jeep forums with an early 4.7L Cherokee who described the same issue I'm seeing. So, my assumptions based on available data is likely 1999 and 2000 model 4.7L's could have had different valve springs and retainers. I did search the Mopar parts sites but could not find a valve spring or retainer for my year so these parts have probably been long discontinued? Again, just a guess.
Oh boy! Now I have to re-do number #2 cylinder when the parts come. Yay!
I wanted to do an update regarding my valve spring question as I had the hardest time finding ANY information on this topic as far as 4.7L revisions over the years. So this may be helpful for those who encounter the same issue.
-------------------------------------------4.7L Chrysler Engine---1999-to-2008---Part Numbers Sourced by Mopar Parts Giant dot com-------------------------------------------------
Note: This topic is mostly intended for pre-2007 4.7L and 3.7L engines as 2008 appears to be a big revision year. This is why I stopped the list at 2008.
These are the parts I ended up using in my 2000 Dodge Durango 4.7L for my valvetrain refresh project at 173k miles:
Below: Mopar Retainer #4781090AA on top of ENGINETECH #ERV1432 Valve Spring. Notice Valve Spring is MADE IN USA. Could EngineTech be getting their valve springs from the OEM Mopar supplier?
Below: Believed to be original, the as removed valve lash adjuster on the left, #53021077 and new ENGINETECH #L4600 on the right. MADE IN Republic of China
Below: ENGINETECH S470V Valve Stem Seals, MADE IN India
Below, the updated later style "small hole" rocker arms. Not sure the exact part number, but likely part number #53020742AC
I used my original valve keepers and became concerned that keeper revision #4536513AB started the same time as the retainer revision #4781090AA. I wondered what difference could there be with the AB added to the end of the part number? Upon close inspection, my eyes cannot see any major difference between the stock keepers #4536513 and the few extra Melling keepers I purchased just in case I lost one. The Melling part number is VL-1093 and has a OEM / Interchange Number: 4536513AB
The next three pictures, below: Original retainer #53020750 with one-half original keeper #4536513, left, and one-half new Melling keeper #VL-1093, right. Note: I did not mismatch keepers during assembly. The below pictures are informational for this post only...
When cross referencing Melling keepers, part number #VL-1093, on the Melling website. I find it is recommended for ALL Chrysler 4.7L and 3.7L engines from 1999 all the way until the last year in 2013 as follows:
3.7L continues in Dodge Dakota and Jeep Liberty in model years 2011, 2012, 2013
Last year of Dodge Dakota 3.7L in 2012
Last year of Jeep Liberty 3.7L in 2013
So between comparing the new and used keepers side-by-side and and getting confirmation from the Melling website, I'm fairly confident that my original non-"AB" revision keepers #4536513 will mate as intended to the new revision Mopar retainers #4781090AA with NO problems. Wow Mopar!!! How confusing.
Anyway. Hope all this work helps somebody out as there is clearly a lot of these 4.7L and 3.7L engines still in the wild. If you're working on an early 1999 or 2000 model year Jeep or Dodge, and nobody has worked on the valvetrain, just know you'll probably need to buy new retainers, #4781090AA, for newer revision style conical valve springs, #53020749AC. And that your original keepers will work on the new retainers.
Good luck in your ancient blood sport of keeping your old Mopar on the road.

Reason: added rocker arms pics
Great job on the parts list. Wait till you do the timing chains. Another job where Chrysler switched things up over the years. We're talking different types of chains, gears, timing covers (hence gaskets) etc.
