2000 Dodge D SLT 4.7.
Hey all... My gas cap on my 2000 Durango is / was broken. I realized this from the check engine light going on and remembering the gas cap can cause this. checked it and sure enough it was off and not closing properly. However its been since yesterday (about 2 hours actual driving time with shuting down), and the check engine light is still on. Some have said give it a couple of days and see if it turns off? The dealer obviously says bring it right up there ($135 to check it out) and they will take care of it. If this is / was just the gas cap I really would hate to pay the $$ to get the light turned off!!. Is there a way that I can turn it off / reset the code / obtain the code? Possible code reader? what one? Or would you suguest I pay to reset / have it checked out to make sure?
Thanks Dave.
Thanks Dave.
Dave you can pick up a code reader from Harbor Freight http://da.harborfreight.com/cpisearc...rd=code+reader It will allow you to read codes and clear them. Not bad for $40 bucks and it will work on other OBDII vehicles usually 1996 and newer. Another option might be your local chain autostore such as Autozone here in Arizona they will read it for free, not sure about clearing it. Good luck with the fix

The code should clear once the fault has been corrected. However you can reset the code yourself by pulling the ECM fuses in the engine compartment, I think they are the 20 amp ones. That will reset the light, but if there is something still wrong then it will trip the CEL again.
