Default brake and abs light, no cruise

Hello, all. I'm brand new to this site, which is great. I have searched the forums, but am not sure of the solution to my problem. Here is the situation.

I have a 2000 Durango. This weekend, my brake and abs light came on. We shut the car off and started it back up and the lights went off. It did it again, and we were able to get the lights to shut off after turning the car off and on again. It did this 4 times over the weekend. After the first 2 times, the cruise stopped working. This was Friday. Saturday, no lights came on and the cruise worked. Then, the lights came on. Shut it off, turned it on, lights went off. But no cruise. As of today, I still have no cruise. And my brake and abs light came on twice. As I said, they don't stay on. I can turn the car off and on and they will go out. But I have no cruise. I haven't noticed if the speedometer is messing up when these lights come on. I've been too panicked because of the lights.

Any help would be so much appreciated by me and my husband. I've seen some posts about the rear speed sensor, but I'm not mechanically inclined enough to know if this is right or not. So, this is my situation. Thanks in advance for your help.

ps. I don't know if this makes a difference, but I live in OK and we had some really rainy weather this weekend when it started. It's dry now, and I still get the warning lights and no cruise.

The problem is more than likely the rear speed sensor that you mentioned. These are the exact symptoms you see when it is defective. For some reason, they seem to disintegrate over time. I believe these are only available at the dealer, but not terribly expensive. They are fairly easy to change, just make sure you dig out all of the old sensor if it has come apart. It is located on top of the rear differential & will have wires going to it. Just remove the bracket and lift out the old sensor. Try not to pry too much and break the old one if you can help it. The job is much easier if the back end is up on ramps.

By the way, this sensor can also cause a check engine light and random stalling as well. It is advisable to replace it as soon as possible.

I hope that this solves your problem.

Thanks so much for your input. From searching the forums, that was what I thought it was. I guess I just needed some reassurance from someone who knows more than I do.

Thanks again. If anyone else has anything helpful to add, it would be much appreciated.
