Default New member with amplifier questions

First off, just joined this forum and burned about an hour of my day reading the forums...some great information here!

I have an '02 Durango R/T with the premium sound. Recently I had the battery fail on me. Jump started it, drove it to auto parts store where it tested bad. Replaced the battery, back up and running. However, my radio does not work now. I found a blown 20A fuse in the "Power AMP" slot (slot 13) and tried to replace it. When I put the new one in, it sparked and blew. Thought maybe I brushed up against something, so tried another with the same result. I figure there is a short causing the problem. Now, here are my three questions.

1) The fuse blows even if the ignition is turned off with the key removed. Should the amp have power running to it all the time?
2) Where in the hell is the amp located so I can replace it?
3) Is this most likely the reason for my battery dying?

Thanks in advance.

You might have a short somewhere and the amp might be behind the dash or in the back hidden I can find out for sure and let you know. For the battery dieing leave the fuse out for the amp and see if your battery is dead again. hope I helped a little.

I bought a spare amp for my 2001 durango off ebay and it's a skinny little thing about the size of a medium size book. I'm pretty sure it's in the back drivers side plastic housing. If you pull the cup holder out by the 3rd row seat, you should be able to see it down in their. Open your rear hatch and look left.....I was told it's in there, although it doesn't make sense to put it all the way in the back, unless it's a space issue. The other side houses the rear AC.

Obviously you have a short, but I highly doubt it is in the amp. The amp BTW is located BEHIND the passengers kick panel. There are trim screws to remove as well as the plastic running up the dash and along the sills to get to all of the screws to get the kick panel out. Right there you will see the OEM amp. It is about the size of a piece of toast.

Has anyone replaced the OEM amp with a good aftermarket amp that will still fit in the same mounting location at the passenger kick panel?

I thought piece in kick panel was a preamp and amplifier was located in back side panels by 3rd seat?

Kensai, You need to watch where you put the amps so they get proper air flow for cooling.

I will have to go see for sure then. Yes I am aware that the amp needs good air flow for cooling. But I am not wanting 100db of sounds either. Just a replacement amp to have a little more power and better bass response than the standard OEM amp. I already replaced all 4 OEM speakers with actual real Infinity 6012's. Sounds nice but lost some Bass that the OEM speakers had. I may repair my OEM speakers and put them back in only to have better sounding bass. The polyeurathane foam rings are all torned up.. But the voicecoils are okay. There is a website that sells foam replacment rings to repair the speakers cheap. I think the cost was like $30 for a pair of those rings plus comes with a kit to center your voicecoil before you glue the ring on the speaker.
