Too many choices - MPG and Performance Mods
Hi folks,
I'm new here, and new to the whole notion of performance modifying my ride. These higher gasoline prices are making me thinking about it, though. I've got a 2001 Durango SLT 4.7L 4x2 with almost 110k miles on her. She still runs great, but obviously now I'd love to squeeze a few more miles per gallon out of her if I can. I've spent a lot of time over the last week researching various mods, and it seems like there are two, in particular, that I should think seriously about - cold air intake and cat-back exhaust. I guess my first question to the community at-large is, does this sound right? (I freely admit I know almost nothing about how an automobile engine really works.) Second question is, if this seems like the right course of action, how do you decide what the best manufacturer and model are to purchase and install? I just haven't seen anything that really lays out the numbers to help anyone make this kind of decision.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave - Marietta, GA

my personal opion will be a lot diffrent from some here, but I think if you just want to get better gase millage mine has become tunns better.. I have a 5.9 slt and I went out to master mufler and bought a flow master 3 inch exhost.. that showed a little diffrence.. but then I bought a cold air intake may I sujest the KNN. but I am now thinking off other cheeper ways like ebay for the tube and the mount on the TB but then replacing there crapy filter with a KNN. I mean you could save at least a 100 bucks .. and the nock off know come with a heat sheld and stuff too... on the pluss the 4.7 is a lot easer I found to find parts then for the 5.9...but for sure get the intake and exhust... that will help tunns.. I also have a tb spacer that came with my intake not sure if it makes much of a differance but lets just say I was driving like I am now when I first bought the rango(20005,5.9) and I got about 10 mph and now after those little modss i get around 13-14 drving the same way.. that was a hell of a lot better than I thought... hope that helps at all... JP[sm=americanasmiley.gif] also are you planing doing instal you self or paying some one that should be something to think about as well.....
Thanks for the input. Getting a 2 to 4 mpg boost would make these changes economically feasible. As for whether I do the work myself - no idea. I'll more than likely bribe a friend or two with beer to help me out.
I would sugest going to a local mufler shop for them the intal a high flow mufler for you usualy cheeper that way because they use there own pipe. and puting in the intake is prety easy fo good luck and have fun..:-)

Do a drop in K&N filter, and a 3" hi flow exhaust. You will be happy!
