Default Tranny cooler

I have been lurking for a bit now and decided I needed to ask a question. I have a 2000 durango 5.9 that didn't have a tow package. I put a hitch on, but overheat when pulling loads up inclines. I was wondering what is the difference in the cooling system with the tow package compared to without?

I put in a new thermostat, replaced the fan clutch, and I'm adding a tranny cooler.

Another question about the tranny cooler. I want to put the cooler on the return line after it exits the radiator. I think the upper line coming out of the radiator is the return line. Is this right? Just want to get the tranny cooler in the right line.

Also if anyone has any info on installing a trailer brake I would appreciate it.

Sorry for all the questions. I usually work on old jeeps, not newer vehicles.

Thanks, Dave

Default RE: Tranny cooler

mine has the tow set up it has a tranny cooler oil cooler and big radiator. i would have the cooling system checked out. the tranny cooler will help the life of the tranny so will synthetic tranny fluid.as for the truck over heat on inclines when u tow u have to slow down up hill and find a slpeed the engine can maintain at 2 to 3 thousand rpm. if it stil over heats. the single biggest thing is a bigger or better radiator. mine came with an aluminum one. a lot of rad shops will add a row or two. or u could get one of the new big racing rads for the durango. there is a site called durango owners club.www.durangoclub.com there is thread on their forum where a guy is doung all the things for towing. he has a whole list of mods and would be good info for u
