One Inch of play in Durango steering NORMAL?
I have a 99 Durango SLT. Its got a tight front end, tie rods, ball joints and such are all tight. There is one inch of play in the steering box. Now when I took it to my mechanic he said that the steering boxes on 98 and 99 Durangos were not very good and if he were to order a reman it would be in tolerance with the 1 inch of play. Okay I said, what about the adjustment on the steering box can we do anything with that? No he said that would only cause the gears to bind up. Ok first off I have a really hard time buying that one inch of play and driving like a over correcting grandma on a ice rink is a normal thing. I also refuse to believe that Dodge put a adjustment on the steering box that would render the steering box unusable. If this were the case it would be bright red and have a ACME do not touch sign on it, just waiting for Wild E Coyote. So what it the truth? Is my Durango going to steer looser than a internet date, and is the little *** on my steering box as useless as the other **** of the world? Hopefully there is a Durango fan without eek, Rack and Pinion, that can answer. I thank you in advance.
First welcome to the forum.
I had about 2" of play in my steering box and I had Firestone adjust it for me for $29 bucks. Just go in there and tell them you want it done, but I would take it someware else. There is no problem in adjustment of the box. Mine runs just fine. I think they are just tring to get you to buy a new part which is very expensive.
