My D did that once too. I thought it was the Battery, it wasnt.

The Battery cable terminals on the D are a poor design. I took my cables off,
cleaned cable terminals and battery post with Baking Soda and water, and tightened
the sh__ out of the cable terminals. This fixed the problem!

Good Luck

Could very well be your batterey connection. A good way to know that this is the problem would be to get in the truck turn on accessories ie. radio and lights, then turn the ignition over. If it is your connection the radio and lights will not come back on for a bit or at all. If it is your starter they are not hard to change at all from what I have heard but you can make it hard on yourself if you don't follow the instructions in your manual (if you have one). Go to a parts store and pick up the manual or download this one here http://www.jameskowalski.com/Dodge/2...dge_Dakota.pdf
It is for a 2001 Dakota but everything is basically the same.

Clean the terminals anyway and then if it doesn't work get out the manual. The starter is a fairly straightforward job.

Classic starter. Replace it.
