Default starter problem?

I just started my V, went down the road & saw my lights flickering. Turned down my tunes & heard wierd noise. I parked, turned ignition off, & starter kept turning. When I turned ignition to the on position it started up again. After switching it on & off a couple times with the same result, I decided to disconnect the battery in the dark with a pair of channel locks. After fumbling for several minutes unsuccessfully, The starter stopped turning. And I was able to turn off the vehicle. A horrible electric smell filled the air. Where do I start?

Default RE: starter problem?

sounds like your starter is on it's way out. the starter solenoid is there to push the gear out to the flex plate/fly wheel and then the starter will turn the motor. either yours is stuck out or its continuing to spin. hard for me to tell from your description. bottom line, you need a new starter.

there is an outside chance your ignition switch could be bad sending the signal to the starter to engage, but I've never heard of it in the past. generally it's the starter.
